Non-Canon Concepts: Dhemsen Universe Theory and the Problem within Terminology

4–6 minutes

Throughout the development of the Haan magic system, there have been several ideas and concepts whose existence has either been scrapped entirely. Or—which is the alternative for the topic of this post—has a place in the system yet do not have a complete description of its relevancy within Haan’s nature. Since the system relies on every concept presented in the Haan system to correlate and work with each other: the need to find functions for all parts amongst the already established ideas are then crucial for the official inclusion of each concept.

One of the concepts whose existence is functional yet not fully possible for official inclusion is the Dhemsen Universe Theory.

What is Dhemsen Universe Theory?

Dhemsen is a group of twenty-two Haan elements whose properties make them able to pull and drag other Haan elements around them.

The Dhemsen Universe Theory is an attempt at explaining the reason behind these Haan elements’ pulling capabilities. The theory suggests the Dhemsen elements are not elements at all but instead are individual rifts into other universes linked with the entire Haan elemental table throughout existence everywhere. The pulling and dragging abilities the Dhemsen grouping possess is then the result of each universes’ linkage with the Sagen world. And because the universes inside of each Dhemsen has their own Haan forces: the draggability of the grouping stems from each universe’s existence within the Haan rain pattern.

This theory does work to explain several ideas within the concept of the Dhemsen Haan elements. The primary idea being the pulling ability the Dhemsen possess. Since no other Haan element has these types of abilities on their own, this concept answers the Dhemsen’s abilities’ origins. It should be noted, however, that this theory does come with concerns for the Haan terms used. Specifically for the term ‘’element’’ which—if this concept were to become official within the Haan system—would cause a need to reconstruct the view of how the Haan elements are spoken of. Using already established terms and words to describe the ideas presented in the Haan system makes it easier to understand and imagine the concepts talked about. But at the same time makes it harder to speak of the system without crossing into already established real-life concepts of how our world function.

In the real-world, ‘’element’’ has a concrete meaning and understanding. Within the Haan system: it does not. It then becomes a question of remaking the terminology used for the Haan elements in its entirety. But by doing so, there would also need to be give a concrete explanation for all Haan table of elements before such a terminology change can occur.

Another concept this theory solves is the explanation for the existence of ‘’half’’ Dhemsen elements. The grouping consists of twenty-two elements. One half are ‘’full’’ elements and the other half is ‘’half’’ elements. In this context, the words full and half refers to the general strength of the Dhemsen element in question. When a character use Dhemsen elements, what type of Dhemsen it is affects the overall draggability of the Dast Casting spell composition. The latter half of the Dhemsen table is known within Sagen to have a weaker pulling force then the former half of the grouping. This theory explains the reason for this. This being the latter half of the Dhemsen grouping consisting of smaller rifts which do not have the same ability to influence the Sagen world.

This theory also has potential of being a part of the explanation for the Haan elements’ travel throughout the worlds linked with Sagen. This being the entire table of Haan elements which used to exist in Sagen before C’alorus’ leave to Alvenru. Though it needs a much more detailed description, the Dhemsen Universe Theory gives a more complete explanation of the Haan elements’ ability to travel across the linked worlds. Since the rifts serves as literal portals to the linked worlds with Sagen. And too does it explain why all Haan elements used to exist within Sagen before C’alorus’ disappearance but not after.

Why it is Not Currently Canon

The Dhemsen Universe Theory explain the Dhemsen elements’ pulling ability. However, it does not mention the existence of any other element within the Haan table. Because of this, more work needs to be done towards the description of other Haan elemental groups before a theory such as this one can become official within the system.

As mentioned previously: terminology also needs to be kept in mind if something like this were to become an official part of the system itself since it needs to fit with everything else around it. The baseline functions of Dast Casting and Haan’s nature presented within The Haan Study has a complete explanation of their connection to each other. The issue arrives once the explanation gets to the level of existence rather than general spellcasting practices.

On top of this is also the need to develop a more concrete understanding of what the Haan elements are within the Sagen world. This theory give way for this. Yet, there needs to be a greater pull towards explaining the rest of the Haan elements before this theory can become canon.

For the time being: the Dhemsen Universe Theory is something which is kept in mind with the continued development of explanation for Haan’s fundamental nature. And have the potential of becoming canon if the rest of the system’s functions allows it to be.
