The Haan Magic System: Haan Terms and the Problem with Using Established Science Lingo

4–5 minutes

Throughout the development of the Haan magic system: a multitude of concerns and issues have emerged in several different forms—like logic errors and unclear categorizations for practiced concepts within written text—which goes against other ideas and concepts already in place. As the development of the Haan system becomes increasingly larger also comes the need to find solutions for logic errors within already set ideas of the system itself.

One of these concerns having persistent throughout the system’s development, have been the usage of real-world scientific terms to describe the concepts being presented within the Haan magic system.

Magical Molecules: as Seen by the Naked Eye

The usage of terms, such as “molecules” and “elements”, have made it easier to describe the Haan system’s ideas to the point where readers—who do not know of the systems’ core functions from the beginning—are able to understand the ideas presented by using already established concepts of how the universe we live in function. But using the terms in this fashion, also comes the concern of having terms within the Haan magic system not being accurate to the definition of the terms themselves within the real-world. “Molecule” is partially accurate to use in this way due to the idea of Haan Dast Casting spells linking Haan elements together to create the reactions needed for the spell to have its destructive properties. In the same way one oxygen element and two carbon elements linked together form water. Yet the term is inaccurate to use since water do not have just one singular molecule structure. Even for a small glass of water: the number of molecules needed for that one glass is an incomprehensible amount to think of without the need for technological assistance. This is not the case for Haan spells.

Designing Fiction: Building Ruins with Shattered Stone

The term “molecule” is used to give the picture of Haan elements linking and reacting to each other to form Dast Casting spells. But by doing so also comes the concern that the term is more than a simple “link together” explanation. Though, however, the usage of scientifical terms have not been a mistake. This is due to using words and ideas people are already familiar with have in turn reduced the need to spent great deals of time and mental strain to learn how the Haan magic system works from the reader’s perspective. This ties into the points mentioned within the first scroll of The Haan Study: chapter one, quote:

‘’But rather, the system acts as a bridge, giving knowledge about how these magical abilities existing within the Fantasy world it is presented in and how it functions. And exist to help the reader gain a deeper sense of danger and tension within the stories the system is being used in.’’ End quote.

As originally designed: the Haan system came from the idea of creating an explainable magic system where there is no need for the average reader to know of to enjoy reading the books being published.

A great achievement for the development of the Haan system would be to arrive at the point where tremendous influence can be used from the system without the need for the reader to know the system even exist. In the same way a person can use every aspect of a computer without knowing how to code or how it even function in the first place.

In Conclusion

The Haan system was not made to explain real-life concepts and understandings of how our universe functions. But more to serve as its own “scientific” understanding of how the universe of The Eferian Day works. For the word “science” is the study of the natural world. And in Sagen: the Haan magic system is part of the Sagen universe’s nature. And because of that then makes it part of the fictional world’s science. For all, the system was created to bring an in-depth understanding of how grounded Fantasy worlds could function without mysticism. As stated in the series’ description:

“The Eferian Day is a Dark Fantasy book series exploring explainable magic science down to the molecules of spell composition. Its primary purpose is to give a concise and simple understanding of magic functions apposed from mysticism and disbelief in grounded fictional worlds.”

As I have mentioned before: no concept and idea in the Haan system is set in stone. And that too goes for the terms being used to describe them. With the continuation of the system’s development will also come new ways to describe the ideas being presented. And with it, to also find more accurate descriptions to bring the Haan magic system to life to a greater extent than its previous renditions.

All in active attempts to improve every time new ideas are brought forth. And to change the system for the better once concepts have gotten a more robust understanding of the theoretical world it resides within.

To continuously improve, just like science in real-life.
